While we aim to do our due diligence in monitoring transactions, our current system allows for offline payment methods (such as PayPal, Zelle, and others), which come with certain risks. To help protect you and your investment, we’ve put together this guide to help you navigate the buying process and avoid potential scams.
1. Research the Artist
Before making a purchase, take the time to:
- Check Reviews: Look for feedback from other buyers who have worked with the artist. Positive reviews and long-standing reputations in the community can be good indicators of trustworthiness.
- Verify Portfolio: Make sure the artist has a portfolio or examples of their work. This gives you a clearer idea of their style and professionalism.
- Contact the Artist: If you have questions or concerns, reach out to the artist before making any payments. Reliable artists will be responsive and open to communication.
2. Use Trusted Payment Methods
When paying an artist, it's important to use methods that offer protection in case something goes wrong. Here are some tips:
- Use PayPal Goods & Services: PayPal’s "Goods & Services" option offers buyer protection in case the artwork is not delivered or if it’s not what you expected. Avoid using PayPal’s “Friends & Family” option as it does not offer the same protection.
- Avoid Bank Transfers or Unprotected Payment Methods: Payments via Zelle, bank transfer, or cryptocurrency are riskier because they do not offer any buyer protection in case of fraud.
3. Get Everything in Writing
Before finalizing a purchase, make sure to:
- Agree on Terms: Clearly outline the agreement between you and the artist. This should include the type of artwork, deadline, price, and usage rights (if applicable).
- Request an Invoice: When using PayPal or a similar platform, ask the artist to send an invoice. This creates a record of the transaction and ensures both parties are on the same page.
- Save Communication: Keep all communication with the artist in case you need it later to resolve a dispute.
4. Protect Your Personal Information
Be cautious when sharing personal information:
- Limit What You Share: There’s no need to provide personal details like your home address or phone number unless the transaction specifically requires it (e.g., for physical art shipments). Most transactions should only require your payment info and an email address.
- Avoid Sharing Passwords or Private Credentials: Never share your PayPal or bank account login details with an artist. Payments should always go through secure payment platforms.
Understand Art Den’s Role
While we do our best to keep Art Den safe, it’s important to know that transactions using offline methods (such as PayPal, Zelle, etc.) are beyond our direct control. We cannot guarantee refunds or dispute resolutions for transactions completed outside the platform.
If you experience issues or suspect fraudulent behavior, report it to Art Den’s moderators immediately. We will investigate and take action to protect the community, though offline payment disputes must be handled through the payment service you used.
